Utility bills tend to jump the highest during chilly winter months, and furnaces can sometimes be responsible for gas usage increases.

We put together a few tips on how to avoid an exorbitant power bill this winter.

  1. Caulk up your cracks. This will seal up areas that allow warm air to escape, and cool air to come into your home.
  2. Close up rooms that aren’t in use.
  3. Keep fireplace dampers closed when not in use.
  4. Set thermostats to temperatures you want to reach, instead of setting them extremely high to warm the house more quickly.
  5. Increase humidity with houseplants, aquariums or a humidifier.
